Merrimac Debating - A force to be reckoned with |
|
.jpg) On the Wednesday, 20 August the Gold Coast Secondary School’s Debating Association Grand Final was held at All Saints Anglican College. Merrimac State High School was proudly represented by our Year 11 team, comprising of Milly Arsic, Lucy Hokinson, Danielle Turner and Harry Keil. The topic was That Australia is punching above its weight on the global stage, with Merrimac taking the negative and Marymount College taking the affirmative. It was a hard-fought debate with both teams bringing up a myriad of valid arguments. However, there must be a winner and unfortunately the decision went to Marymount College on a 2-1 split from the panel of adjudicators.
In true Merrimac spirit, our team took the outcome in good grace, proud to be competing at such an elite level. Merrimac was the only state school represented at the Grand Final, and received praises for our skill, professionalism and obvious dedication to the debating competition. Special mention went to Lucy Hopkinson who was awarded Speaker of the Night.
Congratulations to our Year 11 team, once again proving that Merrimac is a force to be reckoned with in the debating arena. 2009 is looking to be another great year, so if you’re argumentative and thrive on spur-of-the-moment decision making, get involved in debating at Merrimac.
