Presentation Night 2009 PDF Print E-mail

On Wednesday 28 October, our 30th Presentation night was held at the Gold Coast Arts Centre. The theme for the evening was ‘Striving for Unity’ which highlighted our strong belief that great things can be achieved when we work together.
We acknowledged around 250 students who had been outstanding in their efforts throughout the year. Students were recognised for academic excellence, cultural and sporting achievements and community service. Of course all this could only have been achieved by the students with significant support from families and teaching staff as well as learning partnerships with peers, industry, tertiary institutions and community groups. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who support our students in their endeavours.
It was also a very entertaining evening, with many students showcasing their extraordinary talents in the areas of acting, singing, musical performance and dance. As always, the dedication of staff members was evident and their willingness to mentor and guide our students is why Merrimac is such a fantastic school.
Our major award winners include:
Dux – Milly Arsic
Pride in Excellence Award- Elysia Sokolenko
Caltex All-Rounder – Sam Jones
Michael Carmody Participation Award – Lucy Hopkinson
Sportsman of the Year – Taylor Booker
Sportswoman of the Year – Chantelle Barsby
SEP Sportsperson of the Year – Belinda Steinhardt
School Based Trainee of the Year- Emily Fraser
Vocational Student of the Year – Yolanda Creaser

In addition a significant number of our Year 12 students have secured tertiary study pathways for 2010 either through scholarships or direct entry schemes. These are across a range of institutions including Gold Coast TAFE, Griffith University, Bond University and College Australia, all of which are valued partners.
Our growing stream of vocational students have also excelled this year. Our partnerships with employers and training organisations have meant many of our Year 12s have gained industry standard qualifications and will be very competitive in the employment market. Merrimac SHS looks forward to building on these successes in 2010.
Susan Bell – Deputy Principal
