The Arts

Merrimac State High School prides itself on the exceptional standards attained by its students in the Arts. Through our program, we strive to empower students with creative learning to reach excellence with pride.

The Arts

Our students are offered a wide range of subject choices within the Arts: Visual Art, Creative Arts, Performing Arts, Drama, Dance, Dance Extension, Music and Instrumental Music. Our Junior School (Years 7-9) may select to study a combination of the Arts, in order to explore all fields and gain a firm foundation of skills in readiness for further specialisation. Creative Arts combines Art and Media, and Performing Arts is the integrated study of Dance, Drama and Music.

We encourage students to achieve their personal best, producing results they can be proud of and skills that will transcend into future learning, experiences and career paths.

Visual Art

Our Visual Art students produce exceptional pieces that are frequently displayed in school-based, regional and state exhibitions, including the Energies Exhibition.

Media classes allow students enjoy innovative learning as they explore the use of programs such as iMovie and iMotion. Students of this subject integrate Go-pros and iO mixers into videography, photography and sound engineering modules, making short movies to upload onto YouTube.

To allow students to apply their classroom teachings and to extend their learning, we offer numerous extra-curricula activities. We have a long tradition of staging outstanding, full-scale musicals at the Gold Coast Arts Centre. Our vocal troupe enters eisteddfod competitions and participates in the Creative Generations performance.

Our Instrumental music program broadens the musical, intellectual and cultural horizons of our students as well as fostering self-esteem, confidence and team work. Students learn orchestral or band instruments on a group basis and participate in concert band, stage band, brass, percussion and string ensembles. We offer numerous performance opportunities such as:

  • School concerts
  • Presentation Night
  • Primary school performances and workshops
  • Community events
  • Eisteddfods
  • Fanfare Competition
  • School musical accompaniment

The students also participate in a music camp which focuses on ensemble cohesion and musical skill development.
