As assessment deadlines begin to approach across a number of year levels, this week's Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) focus is centred on an important habit for success at school and in life:
I submit assessment and learning tasks on time.
At Merrimac State High School, we know that meeting deadlines is about much more than handing in an assignment. It requires students to plan ahead, manage competing priorities, make informed decisions about how they spend their time and follow through on commitments.
To support this learning, students participated in classroom discussions exploring the importance of responsibility and reliability, and why these behaviours matter both inside and outside the classroom.
Students were encouraged to reflect on upcoming assessment items, exams and learning tasks, while also considering the many commitments they balance beyond school, including sport, hobbies, part-time employment, family responsibilities and social activities.
As part of this week's lesson, students were introduced to the Eisenhower Matrix, a practical planning tool used to organise tasks according to their urgency and importance. The matrix encourages students to sort tasks based on whether they are urgent, important, both, or neither, helping them make informed decisions about where to focus their time and energy.

Using the matrix, students identified their own upcoming commitments and considered where they should focus their time and energy. The activity encouraged students to think critically about competing priorities and develop practical strategies to stay organised throughout the assessment period.
Through a supporting video and guided classroom activities, students explored strategies for prioritising responsibilities, planning ahead and reducing the stress often associated with last-minute preparation.
The skills explored this week extend well beyond school. Whether meeting workplace expectations, balancing study commitments, preparing for training, managing family responsibilities or pursuing future pathways, reliability is a habit that opens doors and creates opportunities.
Through our PBL framework, Merrimac State High School continues to explicitly teach the behaviours, habits and life skills that help students thrive both in the classroom and within the wider community.
We encourage families to continue the conversation at home by discussing upcoming commitments, helping students plan ahead and celebrating the positive habits that contribute to long-term success.
